STILL KICKIN HERO NOVEMBER 2015
EVERY MONTH, OUR PROCEEDS SUPPORT A NEW PERSON OR ORGANIZATION WHO DEFINES WHAT IT MEANS TO BE STILL KICKIN.
With a name like Sarah Super, she was bound to be an incredible person, and Sarah does not disappoint. She’s every bit as excellent as her name would have you believe.
Sarah didn’t apply to be a Still Kickin Hero, and nobody nominated her, either.
But we found her, when our founder Nora was reading the paper and her name jumped off the page and into Nora's heart.
It was this story that grabbed our attention. The story where her ex-boyfriend, who raped her at knifepoint, was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Where Sarah stood up and delivered a mic drop of a victim impact statement. Where she refused to be silenced and used this horrifying experience to propel herself into action.
Sarah founded Break the SIlence, a movement dedicated to helping break the stigma around sexual assault. She has planned two Break the Silence Events in the Twin Cities, where sexual assault survivors can begin the healing process by finding their voices. And she’s working to create the first sexual assault survivor memorial here in the Twin Cities.
Sarah isn’t just standing up for herself. She's standing up for all victims of sexual assault and for all women. She is standing up to rape culture, to a society that asks victims to stay quiet, that asks them whether they were drinking or what they were wearing instead of standing by them.
Sarah is our Hero for a lot of reasons. Not just because she has a voice that the world needs to hear, but because she is so dedicated to helping other survivors find and use their voices, too.
We’re honored to stand by Sarah.
